1: We needed help and we got it from absolutely everywhere. That’s not to say we didn’t also put together a performance we would have liked to have seen all year. This was better but hopefully it doesn’t wash away the fact that celebrating sneaking into a wild card spot like we’ve won a cup isn’t what this club is about.

2: Our 40 year old wall had some excellent saves and sat an Orlando defender down. Exercise the option. If the team had been better this season he would’ve been up for GK of the year.

3: Unfortunately having the price tag that Alexey has, coupled with the relatively minimal impact he’s had in open play, mean’s he’s got to bury that pen and he hit it far too casually. If you’re not pulling the strings you gotta score in those moments and it’s all the more glaring when you don’t.

4: This was one of Barto’s better games. He seemed much more calm and composed on the ball. No glaring mistakes from him and he played more of that key role of intercepting and cutting off passes and connecting our own attack from back to front. Another one of those “where has this been” type of performances.

5: Conflicted. That’s how maybe a lot of 17’s feel about this match and locking up the wild card spot. It may feel like some of these players don’t deserve it, but there are some that do and Rob definitely does. We can be happy for them.

1: The first 45 was filled with hallmarks of this team. Lots of entries into the final third and no end product. Lots of overcooked crosses and wasted chances. At least we had energy?

2: Pedro has been a revelation. Not only does he play with intensity and full blooded commitment, but he’s got real quality in the attack. His right foot is so well calibrated. His passes are on target and he can thread dangerous balls between defenders better than anyone else currently on the team.

3: Ronald Hernandez is the definition of a good pro. He sees sporadic minutes but he can always be counted on when his name is called. Quality enough player to start every match? Maybe not, but over Brooks right now….couldn’t hurt.

4: Once again, as has been the case SO MANY DAMN TIMES this season, our best opportunities, (and indeed one of our goals) comes off of being quick and direct, or counter play. How much film does this team have to watch before that’s recognized, adopted and consistently implemented???

5: Really looking forward to the non stop access video featuring VAR and the offside flag. We got let off the hook so many times. We couldn’t even keep the clean sheet. But, we’ve given ourselves a chance to get in with help from other teams. Bet champagne popped. No matter what happens on decision day, this team does not have the mentality to do anything in the post season.

1: You’ll notice something about the takes for this match. They could just as easily be about so many other games this season. Slow start. Directionless. Conceded first. Finally wake up and respond and have it not be enough.

2: One thing that has been consistent most of this season, especially in the summer months, is the team’s mentality and how wrong it is. I’m happy we equalized before the half, but after scoring you run into the net, grab the ball, and go again. Celebrating equalizing on what should be a clear goal ain’t it.

3: Alexey is getting his foot on the ball and starting to combine with players up top. That’s something at least He’s got quality and the team lacks the chemistry and anticipation needed to take full advantage of his talents.

4: Criminal defending against a former legend. How in the world Josef is able to get control of the ball the first time and then still have space to receive it again and shoot is beyond comprehension. Basics. Fundamentals. The standard hasn’t been met.

5: Every 17 should listen to the recent Men In Blazers Episode featuring new Ipswich Town CEO Mark Ashton. He talks about building culture and what it means to have EVERYONE at his club ONSIDE. TOGETHER. How it takes relentless dedication and obsession with the game to achieve success. That’s the mentality this club is so sorely lacking.

1: Champions of XG, you’ll never sing that. That about sums up the first half. It wasn’t horrible, but it wasn’t great. We looked organized defensively and pretty average in attack. We’re just not clinical on the chances we should be burying.

2: We improved in attack in the 2nd half. The chances we started to create or happen upon came from quick direct play and quite frankly, just trying. We stopped looking for the perfect opportunity before shooting or just putting a dangerous ball into the danger area. Waiting for the perfect opportunity is something we do too often.

3: Alexey is a talented player. Little hard to see how this particular player makes this particular team better. He’s not a quick with his feet playmaking 10 & that has been how ATL through the years has found success. We might not see how good he can be until this team is really overhauled in the offseason.

4: Ask a fan what an ATL goal looks like. Doubt anyone has a good answer. Still, bout time Fortune gets a little fortunate. Just another name in a long list of kids we have asked to grow up quickly. He’s been a bright spot and like we said last week, play the kid higher up, he’s a dynamic threat that isn’t afraid to have a go.

5: 1 Nil?? In this economy? Said it before, will say it again, 1-0 wins are, in a lot of ways, more impressive than multi goal wins. It doesn’t happen often with us but it’s usually a result of balanced play and that’s what we saw tonight, particularly in the 2nd half.

1: It took about 20 minutes, but the team looked pretty good in the transition moments. Rob said they were emphasizing that over the past few weeks so if we’re not going to have possession, I think we gotta be pretty happy with that.

2: In truth, the team played some pretty competent football, which sounds like a low bar to meet but it’s just how the season has been. We held the top team in the West scoreless for 75 minutes. Moreover, we avoided the glaring gaffes.

3: Not happy to see both of the goals chalked off for offside but nonetheless it was nice to see them come from a restart of play and an attack in transition. Both areas have been lacking and that’s been frustrating because they should be strengths of this team.

4: Fortune needs to be playing higher up more often. He’s got real attacking quality and is at his best when he is in a more direct attacking role than he is as an orchestrator in the midfield.

5: Miranchuk coming on didn’t dramatically change things but we did get to see some of his quality. He’s got a pretty sweet left foot that’s well calibrated. That should bode well for future service into the box. If only we had a lethal 9 waiting for said service.

1: It’s a shame that this was the first playing experience at the Benz for Pedro. It looked like a covid match. Can’t blame the fans for not showing up. The tournament doesn’t feel meaningful and the product on the field isn’t good. It’s a bad showcase for the club.

2: Having a hard time seeing Slisz as a DP level player. It just hasn’t been enough this season. Questionable decision making, questionable ball movement. So many questions, so few answers.

3: Our offense may be anemic, but our defense is stout. Abram continues to show why he deserves minutes and with how thin we are offensively being able to keep fresh legs on the backline has kept us in matches we probably wouldn't be in otherwise.

4: Saba sweet Saba. You are the shining light that we don’t deserve right now. He exhibits a skill that is simply on a higher level than the rest. But let’s be honest, even his skills represent the bare minimum of what it takes in this league to win. It’s just plain not good enough.

5:If Cohen is the heir apparent to Guzan his distribution has simply got to get better. Shot stopping is great, but unless we drastically change our playing style a keeper without confidence on the ball and in distribution will be a liability.

1: Columbus kinda does all the things pretty well and we kinda do some things sorta ok. TBF it was kinda sloppy disjointed from both sides but passing below 80% is pretty alarming. Tho everything is kind of alarming at this point.

2: We do actually create enough chances to score. The chances aren’t coming in bunches but they are actually of high enough quality where we should be scoring and our season XG does back that up. We lack someone who’s explicit job it is to score.

3: There’s a sort of inevitability to us conceding. Columbus barely celebrated when they scored. Thankfully they didn’t bury us when they had the chance. They felt better than us in open play but they weren’t as incisive as they usually are.

4: That’s as quiet as it’s ever been in the Benz with the SG’s trying to send a message to the FO. Whether you agree with that tactic or not, it’s undeniable that when a product ain’t good, paying more for it doesn’t feel right.

5: So after dozens of games and dozens and dozens of attempts we finally score off of a set piece goal. And then we did it again. It’s maddening we haven’t capitalized from more of these opportunities. When a team isn’t playing well it has to make the most of these opportunities and it’s about damn time.

😡Why is staying focused so hard?

1: Problems with re-starts, or in tonight’s case, just straight up starts, continue. It doesn’t make sense. It’s never going to make sense. How do we fix it?

2: The team waking up after going down a goal is nothing new, but that was the best response to conceding we’ve seen all season in the first half. Not only did we equalize but we dominated the game without dominating possession. Rob deserves a lot of credit for this.

3: Unfortunately RSL woke up next. It was unlikely that we were going to get anything out of this match. RSL is a shield competing team and they eventually showed why. No disrespect but we’re rolling with mostly depth players. It’s difficult to analyze this team until post transfer window.

4: We hate to quote Alexi Lalas but “set pieces, set pieces, set pieces”.

5: So what trophy do they give out for best business done? The club is gonna net north of 50 million this summer but what does that net the fans? It’s great business but money has never been an issue. It’s another big window & Garth & Boca have got to get it right and show that we’re capable of more than just good business on the books.

1: Fortune was unfortunate. With more time and development and the right pieces around him, he can be a real game changer. He’s got some real unpredictability to him and he’s not afraid to have a hit.

2: Brooks getting back to form is great to see. His service has been much better. It’s a shame no one had the finishing touch to go with it.

3: If you’re going to hold a higher line, you actually have to press. We did it last match, we didn’t this time. New England was too comfortable in our end.

4: Double digit corners and we couldn’t even get a shot on target let alone an actual goal. We should be and need to be getting more from set pieces.

5: Muyumba’s liabilities are starting to outweigh his positive assets. He has great moments but he gives up possession too much and often at the worst possible times in the worst possible places.

1: The best first half we’ve seen all season and not just because of Saba resetting all of Miami’s clocks. The team was calm and composed in the middle of the pitch. Comfortable and fluid in our buildup. Good off the ball movement particularly within the final third. Less of the ball, more of the attack IN TRANSITION, very productive. Fancy that.

2: Derek Williams is low key massive for this team. Everything feels more calm and assured. We saw him actively communicating when Miami was on the attack and also when we started our build up play….or a COUNTER ATTACK. We’ve been missing a conductor on the backline.

3: That was Almada at his best. He could’ve scored if he’d be a little more direct and a little more selfish but that’s the level of play we got accustomed to and just haven’t seen.

4: Muyumba was stirring the pot the whole game. Dynamic and crafty on the ball. Good vision to see…good attacking runs in behind. Fancy that. The guy was pulling the strings all night. If there’s anything critical to say, at times he tried to do too much.

5: In some ways this result is surprising, and in others it’s not. For reasons unknown, this team needs extra motivation to get going. Whether that comes from going down a goal, going down a man or in tonight’s case, going against the 🐐. The pressure of the game itself never seems to be enough motivation.

1: That starting Xi (albeit not first choice) was chosen and setup to score an early goal. Best we could do was get 56% percentage and .5 XG. That Xi was talented enough to do more and we didn’t. BTW we’ve had the majority of possession in all our losses.

2: Speaking of doing more, Gonzo has consistently talked about simplifying the game for these players, you know what’s not simple? Having MORE of the ball. This team is not capable of playing tiki taka possession ball and Pineda has refused to adjust.

*He said in his presser that he was not expecting LAFC to play with back 5. But they did. So basically a team did something outside of what they normally did in order to obtain a result. Interesting.

3: It’s Embarrassing when we are undone by the simplest of things like balls over the top, & direct through balls that eliminate 3 defenders & not playing to the damn whistle. Tired of hearing praise from Gonzo for the basics when we don’t even execute those.

4: Brooks’ drop off is DEEPLY concerning. We’ve called him Mr Reliable for a reason. He’s been a robot at times with his endurance and consistency and something has happened with his software. He looks defeated, gassed and his service has been crap.

5: “I liked the team’s fight and the chances we created after going down a man” Pineda in is his presser probably. If he genuinely thinks that really starting to play after conceding first AGAIN and going down a man is worthy of praise he needs to go. Truthfully there are plenty of other reasons for him to go. The mentality of this team top to bottom, players to coaches to social media team is wrong. There is no reason to keep him and the staff he brought in.

1: This should NEVER have to be a take but unfortunately we still have players not playing for every ball or even until the whistle. It’s deeply concerning. Full blooded commitment has to be the bare minimum and even that appears lacking too often.

2:Distribution from Guz isn’t bad most of the time but we are not winning the 2nd balls. Infact Nashville’s goal comes off our inability to win those second balls in the middle of the field.

3: When we did win a 2nd ball or a duel it came off Muyumba or Xande so, not bad games for them. But once we progress into the final third there’s no end product. We’re reliant on individual magic but at least we did have one moment of it.

4: Hasn’t been Saba time in quite some time. His flashiness is quite bright, his composure has been quite dull. He’s just been looking less & less like a genuine attacking threat & more & more like a flash in the pan.

5: Nothing has changed. We almost conceded both immediately after scoring & after set pieces and dead ball situations. We were spared by luck, VAR & Nashville not being able to put it away. We’re still a 2nd half team & still decimated by injuries.

1: Well Jennifer got her wish with Saba playing on the left. But as soon as we put one of our more creative and dynamic players on the left, we played predominantly on the right. That was confounding especially when one of our best early chances came off the left.

2: We are not utilizing Thiago to full effect and he’s also not at his absolute best. Apart from that incredible ball he whipped in for GG he’s just not in possession in key dangerous areas where he can attract multiple defenders creating space for others. He’s drifting, trying to find the game.

3: Once again we give up a soft goal from a reset of play. In fairness, we’re really missing a 6’5” Norwegian in those situations but that’s no excuse. And once again we conceded immediately after conceding. We’re so easily exploited and teams know it.

4: Our one goal came off some quick direct counter play. Sure would be nice if we did that more often.

5: Gonzo is a really smart guy. He’s a student of the game. He’s very detail oriented. He knows every little detail about every opponent we face. It’s really impressive. But for unknown reasons, all of his knowledge is not translating to performance results and sooner rather than later it’s going to become untenable.

1: To the left to the left, everything we had was going down the left. Points for trying, but nothing really threatening came of it. Grant it we are missing Xande but even with him in the XI we haven’t been able to create any attacking threats and that continues to be the case.

2: *In the voice of Paula Cole* Where is our set piece threat? Why can’t we score a goal? Where have all our free kicks gone? Seriously, we use to be somewhat productive from free kicks and corners and now we get very little from either.

3: We still look incredibly shaky on dead ball situations and resets in play. Literally with any stoppage in play we just don’t look ready when play resumes and the scouting report is out on that aspect of this team because we’re seeing more and more teams take free kicks and throw ins quickly.

4: We looked really good in the last 20 minutes. If we could just figure out the other 70 we might really have something. It continues to be a total mystery as to why we cannot play with urgency and attacking dynamism over the course of an entire 90 minutes. Clearly we can do it in moments. We just should be able to replicate that over an entire match.

5: We can’t count on our counter press. We don’t look in sync at all when we try to win the ball back. The players just look confused as to what the trigger for the press is. Credit to Slisz and also Dax, who we need to see more of FWIW, for individual efforts but it has to be more about the collective than one or two players.

1: In recognition of 4/20 day Cincy played really high and we were not ready for it. At times it felt like we were playing NYRB and we all know how that goes. Usually we can raise our level to make our opponent uncomfortable. Today we couldn’t raise ours to meet theirs.

2: The energy that Saba brings to EVERY play is DEEPLY appreciated but if he could just dial it back a touch on his final pass, I think with a little more finesse and a little less power he’d have even more end product.

3: Once again we took far too long to get going. Today it took us an entire half. Teams are figuring out that we don’t seem to be switched on at the start. It’s a simple thing & it’s killing us.

4: In the high five we talked about how there could be some communication errors to exploit on Cincy’s back line, there weren’t. They looked like how we have looked up until now. They deserve a lot of credit.

5: We talked last week about how we can’t let conceding soft goals become the story this season. Tonight we wrote another chapter. We have to flip this script IMMEDIATELY.

1: The first half felt like we were pointing a gun at Philly, but both teams knew it was unloaded. As expected we lacked a finishing threat and we played like it in the final third. In the second we loaded it and found some different weapons.

2: All around, despite the result, we still looked solid defensively considering the absences. We’re still blocking shots & most importantly communicating and staying organized as a result. Depth players could’ve REALLY done with a win here though.

3: It was all yellow for Philly in the first half. Good. Happy to see refs dishing out the cards when teams play Curtain ball as it were. Martinez still should’ve been out on a 2nd for kicking the ball away. Yellow is yellow.

4: We have been missing the dynamic and creative Thiago we have grown accustomed to. He showed up in the 2nd half. He stopped drifting out wide & got involved centrally in space. We have depth now so we’re not asking him to put the team on his back but he needs to keep playing like he did today in the 2nd half.

5: Those were two of the most Philly goals we will ever see. Both were against the run of play, both were…dubious in nature. On the first, the ball appeared to go out of play in the build up and the second was off a foul throw. They got under our skin, as they do, and got the brief momentum they needed to flip the game.
